Q & A With Dr. Samir DesaiIn 2013, you wrote the bookMedical School Interview: Winning Strategies from Admissions Faculty. Why didyou decide to now write this new book? The book we wrote in 2013 hadan overview of the MMI process.  At thetime of that book's publication, only 10 or so U.S. medical schools had adoptedthe MMI as an admissions interview tool. Since then, the popularity of the MMIhas exploded in the U.S., and we now have over 30 allopathic medical schoolsutilizing this relatively new interview format. Of course, in Canada where theMMI was developed, it continues to be the interview format of choice at mostschools. It was clear to me that we needed a detailed resource to helpapplicants prepare for the MMI. Was there anything else thatmotivated you to write this book? I have received a number ofemails from applicants/parents across the country, expressing concern about theMMI. How should I prepare for the MMI? What are raters/interviewers lookingfor? What are common mistakes? These were just a few of the questions Ireceived, and there seemed to be a relative lack of resources and guidance for MMIpreparation.  Particularly distressing to mewere the heartbreaking stories some applicants shared with me. In some cases, applicantshad only a single MMI interview, and everything hinged on their MMIperformance. Sadly, things didn't work out, and that bothered me because Ireally felt that these applicants had the potential to make some important contributionsto our profession. So this was another driving force for me to write this book -my desire to help worthy applicants rise to the occasion so that schools do notoverlook or reject them.  Is this book only for medicalschool applicants? Not at all. It's written toempower all students preparing for the MMI. It doesn't matter if you're a medicalschool, pharmacy school, vet school, or dental school applicant. You'll find thedetailed advice, strategies for success, and sample MMI scenarios withexplanations incredibly useful.  Is this book only for U.S.students? Canadian medical students willfind that there is a section in the book devoted to Canadian medical schools. Nomatter where you are in the world, however, I am confident that this book willmeet your needs.Are there any applicants that may be at a disadvantage?The MMI is difficult, and therefore I recommend that every applicant put forth the necessary time and effort. However, research has shown that the MMI process may favor extroverts. This is of obvious concern for introverted applicants but my experience has shown that introverted applicants can do well with the proper preparation. We address some of this in the book.What else would you like totell applicants?If you've received aninterview, I would like to congratulate you. With the intense competition forspots, it's an honor to receive an interview invitation. Now with thisinvitation in hand, there's still a lot of work to be done. Although the MMI ischallenging, it's not insurmountable, and you can do well. I am a health communication professor and I work closely with the university's premed program. I sometimes do trainings prepping the students for their med school interviews and many of my students have been successfully admitted to med school. I have found this book, along with The Medical School Interview: Winning Strategies from Admissions Faculty to be the 2 essential books of prepping for med school. The best thing you can do for yourself is buying these 2 books, reading them thoroughly, and practicing more than once. Start with the other one, and then if you are informed that you will have an MMI, go ahead and read this one. If you won't have an MMI, still browse through this one because it gives you interesting ethical questions to think on, which should get your medical communication juices flowing and ready for an interview!As someone who helps train prospective med school students, I want to emphasize that whatever book you buy, you need to practice. Practice out loud and hopefully to another person who is listening to you and providing feedback.
While the MMI can be incredibly variable as another reviewer pointed out, this book lays a foundation to help you deal with anything thrown your way. I interviewed at 2 schools that used MMI. One of them had scenarios that were so similar to those presented in the book that it was actually a little funny. The other school's scenarios did not match these well at all unfortunately. The latter school was much more intellectual, I'd say. Regardless, I felt that this book helped me approach the interviews very well.I suggest reading the lessons and then having a friend or 2 act out the scenarios with you to test yourself.I can happily say I was admitted to my top choice (a school that used MMI) and I think I can give a good amount of credit to this book.Thanks!
Before reading this book, I have read other books written by the author and found them to be insightful. Unfortunately, it was not the same for this book. I don't think this book is useless, but the insights were common sense and I personally didn't think I benefit much from reading the book.
This book is a lot of the author talking about why he's qualified and the process. Having said that, I think it's good for someone who hasn't done their internet research on MMIs. For those who have looked into the process and are familiar with it, I wouldn't say it's worth buying. Just look up examples online.
I could not recommend Dr. Desai's books or advising services more. As an applicant I purchased this book, his Medical School Interview book, and also enlisted him for personalized mock interview training. He has been exceptional. As a nontraditional student who does not come from a family of healthcare providers, he provided crucial, personalized feedback toward my success on interview day. That said, I'm sure he would be able to guide any kind of applicant toward their personal goals. I am happy to say, I am now a MSI. I will continue to look to Dr. Desai's books and guidance on my journey through medical school and towards residency. The application process is crazy, Dr. Desai's books and advising bring peace of mind to the madness.
With the MMI being a relatively new interview format, I struggled to find clear resources on how to prepare for it. Many of my friends said there wasn't a way to prepare. However, Dr. Desai's book is a must read for an applicant with an MMI, or one taking the CASPER exam. The organization and content are second to none, and he provides instructions on how to guide your thought process to respond efficiently and thoroughly to the various stations. I am confident my MMI performance is enhanced because of this book.
If you're interviewing at a medical school using the MMI, this is the book for you! Well written and superbly organized, this book is filled with detailed information. It will show you exactly how to perform during your MMI. I liked how the author backed up his recommendations with the perspectives of admissions officials and findings from research. The practice scenarios are great, and cover important ethical topics like organ donation, transplant, end of life care, and patient confidentiality. Highly recommended!
